FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Oct. 4, 2006
Hudson Valley Community College continues its inaugural Citizens' Academy, a monthly interactive education program, on 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 25, with "Building the Future: Economic Development in Troy."
The program, which is free and open to the public, will include discussions on how the city's large and small businesses can benefit from the emergence of Tech Valley and how citizens can be better informed about economic development decisions.
Based on a similar program offered in Syracuse, the Citizens' Academy is a way to inform citizens about how the community is organized, how services are delivered and how to become a more active member of the community. The Citizens' Academy also will highlight how academic and credit-free training programs offered at the college can tie into career opportunities that impact the community.
Each monthly session will focus on a different key subject and will feature representatives from local government and community organizations and the chance for an open dialogue.
Future programs include "All Roads Lead to Troy: Public Transportation and Traffic Issues" (Nov. 29); "Public Safety and Health: Core Services that Keep Troy's Citizens Healthy and Safe" (Jan. 31, 2007); "Learning For All: Educational Opportunities" (Feb. 28, 2007); "Troy's Neighborhoods: Housing and Living in Troy" (March 28, 2007); "Dollars and Sense: Local Funding and Budget Issues" (April 25, 2007).
Programs will be held on the last Wednesday of each month and will take place in the Bulmer Telecommunications Center on the Hudson Valley campus. The initiative is being funded by a President's Innovation Grant, which supports new programs at the college that are not supported through regular funding.
