Hudson Valley Community College Announces Credit-Free Courses For Winter and Spring

From bass fishing to retirement planning, Hudson Valley Community College has something for everyone in its newly-announced slate of credit-free classes scheduled for the winter and spring months.

"The upcoming term will have some of the popular favorites that we've offered in the past such as "Defensive Driving" and the motorcycle "Basic Rider Course," but we have some new courses this year as well," said Chris Helwig, director of the college's Office of Community and Professional Education.

New course offerings include: "Strategy Board Games: An Introduction," "Learn to Read a Map," "Cooking With Wild and Gourmet Mushrooms," and "The Art and Science of Animal Training."

"Strategy Board Games: An Introduction" will provide a primer on the wide variety of board games designed for adults. During seven sessions starting Monday, January 23, instructor Bruce Linsey will introduce students to several board games and outline strategies and tactics. The course will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m., Monday evenings.

"Learn to Read a Map" will be a three-session course from 7 to 9 p.m. beginning February 25 on the most advantageous ways to plan vacation routes. Discover how to read map symbols and use them to your advantage. The instructor, Richard Burke, also teaches the course "Traveling in Great Britain and Ireland."

"Cooking with Wild and Gourmet Mushrooms" will explore the assortment of edible mushrooms now available. Instructor John Boyle, who also teaches the course "Safe and Edible Mushrooms," will share some of his cooking techniques for a variety of wild and domestic mushrooms. The course will run from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, February 24.

"The Art and Science of Animal Training" will review animal training history, philosophy and teaching techniques, and will run for three sessions from 7 to 8:30 p.m. beginning March 2. The instructor, Catherine Crawmer, has more than 40 years of experience as a professional animal trainer.

This winter the college also will offer several refresher courses mandated for health care professionals, as well as part one of the certification course required of all high school athletic coaches, "The Philosophy, Principles and Organization of Athletics in Education."

In addition, the college will offer new courses through the Center for Creative Retirement, which is aimed at retired persons who have an interest in learning and meeting new people. Courses can be one session or several sessions long and all are priced reasonably, usually $5 or less per session. New this season will be a trip to the Culinary Institute of America, complete with a tour and lunch at L'Escoffier restaurant. Historical and literary programs will focus on the symbolism of Robert Frost; Philip Schuyler and 18th century Albany; the effect of our country's wars on the Rensselaer County home front; and the lasting impact of the early Dutch settlers on the region.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training.
