Hudson Valley Community College will host a community preview party for the Joseph L. Bruno Stadium from 12:45 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15. There is not rain date for this event. Call 629-4829 for a weather update. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

  • 12:45 p.m. – Gates open;
  • 1 p.m. – The July Fourth Quartet will sing;
  • 1:15 p.m. – A re-creation game featuring today's Troy Haymakers, an amateur-league team, vs. a team wearing uniforms from the 1883 Troy Haymakers, one of the area's first professional teams. The game will feature equipment from the 1880s and the players will not wear gloves;
  • 2:30 p.m. – Media home run derby, which will feature television, radio and newspaper personalities;
  • 3:45 p.m. – Children in attendance will have the opportunity to run the bases at "The Joe."

Additionally, authors Jim LaBate, Maureen Holohan, Tom Barthel and Gene Carney will be on hand. LaBate, a Hudson Valley employee, is the author of two sports novellas, Mickey Mantle Day in Amsterdam and Let's Go, Gaels. Holohan, a Troy native, writes "The Broadway Players" series, books that are geared toward girls who love sports. Barthel, of Clinton, N.Y., is the author of Walkie-Talkie Fanning Bees ... Baseball Ambassadors Visit WWII Combat Areas, a book that details the experiences of baseball players sent on six USO tours, from the Aleutians to New Guinea, during World War II. Carney, who lives in Utica, is the author of Romancing the Horsehide: Baseball Poems on Players and the Game.

In May 2001, Senator Joseph Bruno secured funds to construct a 4,500-seat baseball stadium at Hudson Valley. The $14-million Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is now ready to host the Tri-City ValleyCats, who kick off the home portion of their schedule on June 21.
