Representative John E. Sweeney will be honored on Thursday at the Hudson Valley Community College Distinguished Alumni Luncheon.

A 1979 graduate of the college's Liberal Arts program, Sweeney is a second-term congressman from Clifton Park, who was born in Troy and lived in a public housing project for his first five years.

Sweeney dropped out of Lansingburgh High School, and later earned his associate's degree at Hudson Valley, before going on to further education and a law degree.

He was elected to Congress in 1998.

Sweeney will be presented with his award by last year's winner: Neil Kelleher, chairman of the Rensselaer County Legislature. The event will take place at noon in the meeting rooms of the Bulmer Telecommunications Center at the college.

The Distinguished Alumni Award annually recognizes alumni whose commitment to service and achievement brings distinction to themselves and to the college. Distinguished Alumni are nominated by their colleagues and fellow alumni for the honor. The Office of Alumni Affairs and the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation sponsor the luncheon.

Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 50 degree and certification programs in four academic divisions: Liberal Arts and Sciences; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Business; as well as programs run through the Educational Opportunity Center offering certification programs in workforce and academic preparation. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
