CONTACT: Deborah Renfrew (518) 629-7180, d.renfrew@hvcc.edu
FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Thursday, March 15, 2012

What: Fourteen students from Hudson Valley Community College will depart from the Albany International Airport on Friday, March 16 to spend their Spring Break volunteering at the Brevard County, Florida, 24th Annual Strawberry Festival to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. The students, from various disciplines within the college, will spend two days working at the festival in various capacities and a third day helping to deconstruct and clean up the festival site.
Why: Hudson Valley students regularly participate in local Habitat for Humanity building and fundraising projects. This year the Hudson Valley Student Government voted to participate in this fundraiser because it is in an area that is in great need of Habitat for Humanity housing.
Who: A roster of the volunteer students will be provided upon request. The students will be accompanied by Susan Kilgallon, chairperson of the Habitat for Humanity Club and associate professor of Civil, Construction, Industrial and Mechanical Technologies at Hudson Valley, and Cylon George, campus chaplain.
Where: Students and their chaperones will assemble in front of the US Air Departure Gate on the first floor of the airport.
When: 6:30 a.m., Friday, March 16.
Details: The Habitat for Humanity club has been active on the Hudson Valley campus for several years and students are engaged in many of its projects in Troy and Albany. These volunteers say they don't mind giving up Spring Break fun and relaxation for a chance to help others in a meaningful way. The students paid a portion of their expenses for the trip. The remainder is covered by the college's Student Government. Twice, home designs created by Hudson Valley students in the Computer Aided Design curriculum have been chosen for building by Habitat for Humanity. The Strawberry Festival raises an average of $250,000 each year.
