Prior to that, he served as vice president for student development at Lakeland Community College, in Kirtland, Ohio, an 11,000-student college located just outside of Cleveland.

The college's Board of Trustees selected President Matonak for the job in November 2004, after a year-long presidential search process that actively involved faculty, staff, alumni, students and community members.
