The contest allows students – both freshmen and seniors – to put the civil engineering technology knowledge they have gained to the test by designing, building and racing a canoe constructed of concrete and other materials.

The competition in April will pit Hudson Valley against several four-year institutions, including Cornell University, Rochester Institute of Technology and the University at Buffalo. The students will be judged on an oral presentation, their canoe's design, the appearance and workmanship of their canoe, and how they perform in the canoe races. In last year's overall competition, RIT finished first; Hudson Valley, second; and the University at Buffalo, third.
