US Department of Labor Community-Based Job Training Grant (CBJT)

Hudson Valley Community College received a $1.97 million Community-Based Job Training Grant from the US Department of Labor in February 2009. The goal of the three-year grant is to support the development of career access ladder courses for economically, educationally and socially disadvantaged youth and adults in the energy efficiency or green job industry sector. The main barrier to disadvantaged, under-employed, unemployed, and entry-level employees is the cost of training to enter new career fields, obtain preparatory skills and upgrade existing skills.

The grant will cover the cost of the tuition for students to take the career access ladder courses, which will provide the foundational skills necessary to advance the students to the higher level courses in the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) sponsored Home Performance residential energy efficiency program.

The three courses are: Building Analyst, Basics of Building Science (15-hour online) and Basic Air Sealing and Insulation Installer (Building Performance Institute Certification Course). The grant is using NYSERDA's Energy Smart Learning Center Network of 12 training locations across New York State to provide access to these basic skills development courses.
