Coming off its most wins in 13 years, the Hudson Valley Community College women’s soccer team has high hopes for the 2007 season.
“Our team has bonded and come together rather quickly this season,” third-year head coach Jay Pokines said. “We have the potential to make a deep run into the Region III tournament this year. To do that, we’ll need to stay healthy and improve on our conditioning.”
Hudson Valley returns five starters from a year ago, including All-Conference performer Brenna Mereness (Castleton/Maple Hill High School). Mereness was one of the region’s top scorers a year ago with 25 goals and six assists.
The Vikings also return three starters on defense – Brittany Schuman (Schodack/Columbia High School), Laurel Good (Brainard) and Kelly Borden (Lansingburgh/Lansingburgh High School) – along with midfielder Alyssa Cavosie (Waterford/Shenendehowa High School). Cavosie finished with six goals and four assists a year ago and Good had a goal and eight assists.
“We should be strong up the middle,” Pokines said. “We have a lot of veteran leadership in those key positions.”
Hudson Valley opens the 2007 campaign on Friday, August 31 at home against Clinton Community College. The game begins at 4 p.m.
