Hudson Valley Male and Female Athletes of the Month; Team of the Month - January

Kalik Parker

Kalik Parker (Ragsdale/Jamestown, NC) has become one of the top offensive threats in college basketball in Region III. During January, Parker averaged 19.7 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. Parker's ability to shoot the ball has made him a threat as soon as he crosses half court. He scored 25 points or more three times in January, with a high of 28 points coming against Herkimer County Community College. During that game, Parker hit four of his seven three-pointers in the first half.

Parker ranks in the top 10 in four different statistical categories. He is ranked eighth in scoring (17.5), tenth in rebounding (8.6), fourth in three-point field goal percentage (42.7), and ninth in free throw percentage (75.4). The Vikings will look for Parker to continue his offensive success and lead them into post-season play.

Nicole ParkerNicole Sheldon (Columbia/East Greenbush) is coming off an impressive month for the women's bowling team. Sheldon's high score for January was a 234, achieved at the Hudson Valley Invitational. Her best series was at the Columbia Greene Invitational where she bowled a 630. She capped off the month with teammate Megan Mormino (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) at the Blue & Orange Classic, winning the doubles event with a score of 1121. Sheldon also was named first team All-Tournament at the event, finishing fourth with an 1102 in All-Events.

Sheldon is currently ranked number three in individual overall standings, with a 204.83 average. She looks to continue her success in February to prepare for post-season action in the beginning of March.

Women's Basketball Team

The women's basketball team got off to a great start in 2011, winning all five games in January. The Vikings thus extended a five-game win streak prior to the New Year to 10 games. During that time, the women outscored their opponents 394 to 246.

Coach Doemel is especially encouraged by the women's play as of late, stating, "The team is at a point of understanding how to prepare and execute as a cohesive group. We have a well-balanced attack where everyone contributes in her own way. Right now, we want to continue playing hard and take one game at a time."

The team is currently ranked #3 in the Region III Coaches Poll, with an overall record of 13-5. The Vikings are ranked #5 in scoring offense and #4 in scoring defense.
