Coach Gabrielle Doemel and three of her players on the Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team were honored with selections to the All-Mountain Valley Conference teams. Hudson Valley first-year head coach, Doemel, won Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Paige Colfer (Watervliet, Menands), Sarah Carciobolo (Colonie, Colonie) and point guard Molly McGrouty (Watervliet, Watervliet) made first, second and third-team, respectively.
Doemel took over the team this season, after it went 12-14 in 2008-09, and guided players to a 16-8 regular-season record in 2009-10. The women won 11 of their last 12 contests, losing only once since the winter holidays.
Colfer finished the regulars-season as the conference's top rebounder with an average of 13.1 rpg. She also scored 12.4 ppg, averaging a double-double. Carciobolo was second in the Mountain Valley Conference with 14.4 ppg and was first in free-throw percentage at 77.9%. Floor-leader Molly McGrouty played the role of unsung hero this season as she quietly led the Vikings offense and the conference in assists per game with an average of 5.1 apg.
The women will compete in the Region III Tournament Friday, Feb. 25 and attempt to take down undefeated Onondaga Community College.
