FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Monday, Feb. 15, 2010
The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team (15-8) survived a poor shooting performance to defeat SUNY Delhi (10-16), 43-38, on Saturday Feb. 13.
Despite shooting 32% from the floor, Hudson Valley was able to defend and keep SUNY Delhi from breaking 40 points for the contest. After a slow start for the women, they still found themselves leading at the half, 18-11.
The women happily switched hoops and hoped of better shooting in the second half, but still had trouble finding the range. They kept their defensive intensity at a high level, forcing Delhi into several tough, low percentage shots. Every time it looked as though Hudson Valley was about to pull away Delhi would make a play to stay within one or two possessions of the Lady Vikings. Hudson Valley took its largest lead of the second half, 38-33, with a layup by Paige Colfer (Watervliet, Menands) off an out-of-bounds play with 55 seconds remaining. Delhi would answer, but Sarah Carciobolo (Colonie, Colonie) put the game away, going four-for-five from the charity stripe and giving the Lady Vikings the 43-38 victory.
The women will be back on the hardwood on Saturday, Feb. 20 when they host Clinton Community College at 1 p.m.
