FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010
The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team (9-7) defeated conference foe Herkimer County Community College on Saturday, Jan. 23, 63-48. Herkimer had taken down the Lady Vikings, 89-61, back on Nov. 10 at Herkimer.
Hudson Valley did it with defense this afternoon, as they forced Herkimer to turn the ball over 26 times. Several of those turnovers resulted in Hudson Valley transition baskets. The Lady Vikings were trailing, 15-16, before ripping off a 17-3 run over the last 11 minutes of the half to lead, 32-19, at the break. Sarah Carciobolo (Colonie, Colonie) led the Lady Vikings with 13 points in the half. Herkimer started off the second half strong with a run that dented the Hudson Valley lead to seven points, but back-to-back baskets by Paige Colfer (Watervliet, Menands) and a jumper plus an offensive rebound and put-back by Laurel Jicha (Hannibal, Hannibal) increased the lead back to 19, 44-25, with 13:43 remaining. The women never were in trouble of surrendering their lead as they handled the Herkimer pressure. Another late surge by the Lady Viking included baskets by Colfer, assisted by Molly McGrouty (Watervliet, Watervliet) and four points from Rita Holland (Shenendehowa, Clifton Park) made the score 61-43 with 2:33 remaining.
Carciobolo led Hudson Valley in scoring with 20 points. Colfer had yet another double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Holland added 12 points and made several key defensive plays that directly led to Hudson Valley baskets.
The women will be back in action on Monday, Jan. 25 when they host Adirondack Community College at 6 p.m.
