FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Monday, July 27, 2009

Local high school and college standout Gabrielle Doemel has been appointed the new head women’s basketball coach at Hudson Valley Community College. She replaces Colleen Ferris, who will remain at the college as an instructor and academic advisor in the Physical Education department.

Doemel’s coaching experience includes time as a graduate assistant coach at Ithaca College, where she earned a master’s degree in exercise and sports science studies. She also served as the head coach of the Academy of the Holy Names junior varsity team in 2008-09. Additionally, Doemel has many years of service within the AAU basketball circuit and advanced basketball camps.

“It is an honor and privilege to be appointed the head women’s basketball coach at such a prestigious institution that is committed to the success of its student-athletes in the classroom and on the court. I look forward to working with the elite student-athletes that Hudson Valley Community College attracts, and continuing to build a program which reflects the values of the college.”

As an athlete, Doemel excelled at Oneonta State after being a member of Siena College’s program for one season. She helped lead the Red Dragons to an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference title as a senior and was awarded the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Director of Athletics Kristan Pelletier states, “we are thrilled to have someone with Gabrielle’s basketball knowledge, and more importantly her character, take the leadership role within our women’s basketball program. I am fully confident she will excel as both a coach and a role model for our student-athletes.”

Doemel, who will oversee all facets of the NJCAA program, brings enthusiasm and a tremendous work ethic to a Hudson Valley women’s program that has a strong tradition of excellence. She currently resides in Latham and is pursuing a second master’s degree in school counseling.
