Hudson Valley Women’s Basketball Wins Opener

The Hudson Valley Community College (1-0) women’s basketball team opened its season with a 67-26 win over Dutchess Community College (0-1) in the first round of the Second Annual Viking Club Invitational in Troy.
Four players finished in double-figures scoring for the Lady Vikings, who raced out to a 36-12 halftime lead. A pair of freshman forwards controlled the inside the entire game for Hudson Valley. Amber Batzold (Albany/Columbia High School) had 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Rachel Dooley (Grafton/Berlin High School) finished with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
The Lady Vikings also hit five three-point shots, including two apiece by sophomores Erika Russo (Salem/Salem High School) and Jenna Smith (Cohoes/Cohoes High School). Russo finished the game with 11 points and Smith added 10 points.
Hudson Valley will meet Broome Community College in the championship game 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 4.
