Catholic Central Grad Named Player of the Week

     Hudson Valley Community College basketball player Kara Sheehan was named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Female Athlete of the Week in the weekly Region III report released today. Sheehan, a Waterford native who attended Catholic Central High School, was honored for averaging 21 points and eight rebounds per games in three Hudson Valley wins. The second-year guard/forward also is fifth in field goal percentage (56.6) among NJCAA Division III Region III players.

     The Region III report includes statistics from more than 30 two-year colleges from across the Northeast.

     The Lady Vikings (11-0) are ranked second in the NJCAA Region III Division III coach's poll. They are fourth in team offense, scoring 70.5 points per game. Freshman guard/forward Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn) is fourth in scoring, tallying 19.0 points per contest. She is first in free throw percentage (88.5).

     Hudson Valley's men's basketball team (8-1) is ranked first in the coach's poll. The Vikings, also ranked sixth in the nation among Division III squads, are second among Region III squads in team defense, giving up just 63.4 points per game.
 
    The Hudson Valley hockey team (8-3) also is ranked first on the report. The Vikings are second in team scoring, averaging 7.0 goals per game, and team defense, allowing just 2.25 scores per contest. Goalie Jason Vasco's (CBA) goals against average (1.88) ranks second on the report.

    Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions; Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Sciences; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, Hudson Valley Community College has an enrollment of more than 9,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and worker retraining.
