The Hudson Valley Community College women's basketball team opened defense of its 2002 NJCAA Region III Tournament title with a 61-43 win over Corning Community College in the quarterfinals of the Region III Tournament in Utica, New York earlier today. Hudson Valley, the tournament's fourth seed, will meet top seed Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Saturday, March 1 at 1 p.m.
Hudson Valley improved to 20-9 on the season while Corning, the tournament's fifth seed, closes out its year at 19-10.
Sophomore guard Tanya DeLaMater (Troy/Tamarac High School) had a strong performance on both ends of the courts for Hudson Valley. Offensively, she scored a game-high 18 points and dished out six assists. She also held Corning's freshman guard Heidi Brooks (Wayland), the Mid-State Athletic Conference's Most Valuable Player who was averaging 19 points per game entering the contest, to only eight points.
"I thought we played pretty good defense, especially against there guards," said Hudson Valley head coach Colleen Ferris. "We'll need to continue to play good defense and be mentally tough for us to win tomorrow. We must stick to our game plan and we can't worry about the name on our opponent's jersey."
Prior to the game, only two players in Hudson Valley history had recorded at least 300 rebounds in a single season. Two more names can be added to the list. Sophomore forward Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School) finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and currently has 301 boards on the year. Freshman center Latrice Cowart (Severn, MD/Meade High School) upped her season rebounding total to 300 with nine points and 15 boards. Former Hudson Valley forward Julie Broadhead established the school record in the 1991-92 season with 308 rebounds.
Also finishing in double-figures scoring for the Lady Vikings was sophomore forward Carolyn Keeler (Cohoes/Cohoes High School) with 11 points and nine boards.
The Region III All-Stars were announced earlier in the day. DeLaMater earned Second Team All-Region III honors. Von Wergers and Cowart garnered Third Team All-Region III accolades.
