The Hudson Valley Community College (19-7) women's basketball team suffered a 54-42 setback to Mohawk Valley Community College (23-3) earlier today in Troy. Mohawk Valley entered the game ranked #8 in the latest NJCAA Division III poll.
Mohawk Valley raced out to a 10-point lead before Hudson Valley's first two points came with 14: 32 left in the opening half. The Hawks were able to extend their lead to 24-11 heading into the break, as Hudson Valley was ice cold from the floor, making just four shots from the field in the first half.
Hudson Valley closed the game to within eight points, 29-21, with 14:45 remaining in the game but it was as close as the Lady Vikings would get as Mohawk Valley kept its double-digit advantage throughout most of the second half.
Freshman center Latrice Cowart (Severn, MD/Meade High School) finished with 12 points and nine rebounds to pace Hudson Valley. Sophomore forward Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School) finished with 11 points and five boards.
Sophomore guard Deidra Bumbrey (Staten Island/McKee Tech) had a game-high 16 points to lead Mohawk Valley.
Hudson Valley will travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College on Tuesday, February 18 for a key Region III contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fulton-Montgomery is currently ranked #5 in the latest NJCAA poll.
