FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Thursday, January 9, 2003

The Hudson Valley Community College (10-5) women's basketball team suffered a 70-61 setback at Tompkins Cortland Community College earlier tonight in Dryden, New York. It was the first-ever meeting between the two regionally ranked schools. Hudson Valley entered the contest ranked fourth in Region III while TC3 is ranked fifth.

Sophomore guard Tanya DeLaMater (Troy/Tamarac High School) finished with 17 points to pace Hudson Valley. Sophomore guard Casey Brinkman (Troy/Troy High School) had 15 points while sophomore forward Angela Von Wergers (Albany/Bishop Gibbons High School) added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Hudson Valley used a 14-2 run to take an 18-15 lead midway through the first half before TC3's Laura Thomas (South Seneca High/Interlaken) hit the first of what would be a career-high six three-pointers, tying the game at 18-18. A free throw by Amanda McLaughlin (Groton High/Groton) seconds later gave TC3 the lead for good. The Panthers lead by single digits the rest of the way, stretching it to eight midway through the second half after Thomas hit three-pointers on three straight trips. TC3 secured the victory with six points from the free throw line in the final two minutes.

Hudson Valley will host Adirondack Community College on Monday, January 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
