FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Tuesday, March 12, 2002
Hudson Valley Community College's national
championship tournament experience officially kicks off at 3 p.m. on Thursday,
March 14. Playing at Corning Community College, Hudson Valley's women's
basketball team, winners of the NJCAA Division III Region III title, will take
on Passaic County Community College (New Jersey) in the opening round of the
three-day, eight-team NJCAA Division III championship tournament.
Hudson Valley (26-4) is seeded No. 4 in the
tournament and the Lady Vikings are ranked fifth in the country among Division
III junior colleges. Only the top four teams are seeded for the national
championship, and each seeded team begins the tourney against an unseeded team.
Passaic (28-4), an unseeded squad, is ranked seventh in the nation.
The winner of the Hudson Valley-Passaic game
advances to a winner's bracket contest (Friday at 6 p.m.) against the winner of
a Thursday game between No. 1 seed College of DuPage (Illinois) and Ridgewater
College (Minnesota). The loser of the Hudson Valley-Passaic game will play a 1
p.m. loser's bracket game on Friday, against the loser of the DuPage-Ridgewater
The tourney's championship game will be played at 8
p.m. on Saturday, and it will be preceded by three consolation contests. To make
it to the championship contest, Hudson Valley needs to win its Thursday and
Friday games. The Lady Vikings will play all three days, though, regardless of
how they fare each day.
Hudson Valley last appeared in the national
championship tourney in 1993, when it won the national title. This time around,
Hudson Valley is led by two-time Region III Player of the Year and All-American
Lindsey Bradt (Bishop Maginn), who is averaging 20.4 points, 8.1 rebounds
and 4.1 assists per game.
The Lady Vikings leave for Corning on Wednesday,
March 13. They will depart from Hudson Valley.
