Women's Tennis: September 2012 Team of the Month

The women's tennis team went a perfect 6-0 during the month of September, earning a #1 ranking in the region. The Vikings beat the defending regional champion Herkimer Generals on two different occasions in dominating fashion. In just her second season, Coach Potenza has put her team in position to win the conference and the region, and was just recently inducted into the Watervliet Hall of Fame herself as a standout tennis player.

The Vikings have a very solid 1-6 lineup, led by top returner Emily Qua (Ichabod Crane/Stuyvesant). Qua has played in the first flight of both singles and doubles action this year. Incoming freshman Jenna Brophy (Greenwich/Greenwich) has held down the second singles position and is a perfect 6-0 on the season. Haley Knight (Chatham/Canaan), Katie Vogel (Averill Park/Averill Park), Sarah Nuss (Averill Park/Wynantskill) and Nicole Cassidy (Maple Hill/Castleton) round out the remaining four spots in the lineup. There have been a number of different doubles combinations, but the Vikings have dropped only four of the doubles matches out of the 18 played. Their ability to plug players in will be an advantage heading into the post season.

With only two matches left in the regular season, the Vikings have a chance to win the conference and finish the season with a perfect 8-0 record. The team heads down to SUNY-Delhi for the Regional Tournament on October 12 and 13, where a top-three finish will earn them a trip to Flushing, NY to compete in the National Tournament later in October.
