Hudson Valley Softball Sweeps No. 9 Corning

Sophomore pitcher Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg/Duanesburg High School) tossed a no-hitter and sophomore Kayle Countermine (Rotterdam/Schalmont High School) hit two home runs to lead the Hudson Valley Community College (7-10/6-0 Region III) softball team to a 3-0 win over Corning Community College (4-4/0-2 Region III) in the opening game of a doubleheader played today in Troy. Hudson Valley won the nightcap, 9-4.
Chesebrough, who tossed her fourth career no-hitter and her second this season, overcame four Hudson Valley errors to preserve the shutout in the opener. She struck out 14 and walked one.
Countermine led off the first inning with a home run to right field to give the Lady Vikings the early lead. She then hit a two-run blast to left field in the second inning to give Hudson Valley a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Amanda Meher (Troy/Troy High School) was two-for-two in the opener.
Chesebrough allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits in the nightcap to pick up the win and run her record 7-4 on the season. She fanned eight and walked none. In the process, she recorded her 400th career strikeout in the game.
Freshman Kailynn Bateman (Schuylerville/Schuylerville High School) was two-for-four with a double and two RBI to pace the Lady Vikings offensive attack. Sophomore Sarah Spellman (Delmar/Bethlehem High School) and freshman Brittany Grossman (Greenport/Hudson High School) each had a triple in the contest.
Corning entered the game ranked No. 9 in the NJCAA Division III poll.
