Hudson Valley Remains Alive in Region III Softball Tournament

Sophomore Melissa Flint (Barker) tossed a pair of shutouts to lead top-seeded Monroe Community College (33-8) to tomorrow’s championship game of the NJCAA Region III Division III Championship game. Fourth seeded Hudson Valley Community College (30-10) and No. 2 Broome Community College (30-5) each split their games and will meet in the consolation bracket at 11 a.m. Sunday morning. No. 6 Corning Community College (28-10) was eliminated after a pair of losses.

Game 1: Monroe 1, Hudson Valley 0

Flint held Hudson Valley to just two hits to lead Monroe to a 1-0 win over Hudson Valley in the tournament’s first game. She struck out seven and walked one. Monroe scored its lone run when Kate Blundell (Liverpool) led off the sixth inning with a double and Alison Duff (Brockport) hit a one-out double to the left field fence.

Freshman Melissa Van Heusen (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville High School) was one-for-two at the plate for Hudson Valley. Freshman pitcher Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg/Duanesburg High School) allowed just one run on three hits. She struck out nine and walked one.

Michelle Forsburg (Vestal) tossed a perfect game to lead Broome to a 7-0 win over Corning. She struck out 10. Forsburg had a two-run single in the fifth inning to help her cause. Heather Riemen (Hancock) was two-for-four with a double for Broome.

Game 3: Hudson Valley 2, Corning 1 (Corning eliminated)

Freshman Jessica Surette (Berwick, ME/Noble High School) was two-for-three and had a two-run single in the fifth inning to lift Hudson Valley to a 2-1 win over Corning. Chesebrough allowed just one unearned run on six hits, striking out 11 and walking one.
Jess Santobianco (Elmira) and Jenna Dart (Addison) each had two hits for Corning.

Tara Rogowski (Buffalo) was two-for-three with a home run and three RBI to lead Monroe to a 3-0 win over Broome. Flint allowed just one hit for her second shutout of the day. She struck out eight and walked two.
