Hudson Valley Splits with DuPage

The Hudson Valley Community College softball team split with the College of DuPage in a meeting of nationally-ranked teams in Orlando, FL. Hudson Valley won the opener in eight innings, 6-5, and lost, 4-3, in the nightcap in eight innings.
Hudson Valley, ranked third in the NJCAA Division III poll, is now 2-1 on the season. Fourth-ranked DuPage is 7-2.
Freshman Sarah Spellman (Bethlehem/Bethlehem High School) drove in five runs in the opener for the Vikings. She hit a game-tying grand slam over the left field fence in the bottom of the sixth inning and then had the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning.
Sophomore pitcher Laura Rogers (Greenwich/Schuylerville High School) pitched three scoreless innings to pick up the win for Hudson Valley. Freshman catcher Talia Valenti (Troy/Troy High School) added a double and a single for the Vikings.
Tatiana Gibson roped a two-run triple to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning to give DuPage the win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Melissa Van Heusen (Scotia/Scotia-Glenville High School) had two singles for Hudson Valley. Despite taking the loss, freshman pitcher Tracy Chesebrough (Duanesburg/Duanesburg High School) only allowed three hits and struck out 13 batters.
