FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Sunday, April 27, 2003

Freshman Danielle Duggan (Saratoga Springs/Saratoga Springs High School) drove a bases-loaded single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Hudson Valley Community College softball team to a 2-1 win over Broome Community College in the second game of a doubleheader played earlier today in Troy. Broome won the opening game 5-0.

Hudson Valley, ranked eighth in the latest NJCAA Division III poll, is 18-5 on the year. Broome moves to 16-2.

After falling down 1-0 in the top of the fourth inning, freshman Rebecca Frederick (East Nassau/New Lebanon High School) ignited a one-out rally in the bottom of the inning when she reached on a throwing error by the Broome shortstop and advanced to second base. Freshman Lauren Krogh (Troy/Troy High School) then doubled to center, which plated pinch runner Samantha Zotto (Troy/Troy High School) to tie the game at 1-1.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Prior (Coeymans/Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk), playing for the first time in two weeks due to an injury, scattered seven hits over eight innings. Sophomores Jill Fox (Loudonville/Bishop Maginn High School) and Casey Brinkman (Troy/Troy High School) had two hits apiece for Hudson Valley.

"I'm happy with the split today," said Hudson Valley head coach Jeff Beyer. "Our defense let us down in the opener, but we responded and played well to get the second game."

Sophomore pitcher Amy Martino (Chenango Valley High School) overpowered the Lady Vikings in the opener, allowing only one hit and striking out 17 batters over seven innings.

Hudson Valley will travel to Fulton-Montgomery Community College for a doubleheader on Monday, April 28. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
