Averill Park, N.Y., May 4, 2002 – By sweeping Genesee Community College this afternoon, Hudson Valley Community College's softball squad improved to 23-2 in its last 25 games. Playing at Averill Park's Classie Lassie Softball Field, the Lady Vikings won by scores of 12-1 and 14-0.

Hudson Valley, which won the regular-season Mountain Valley Conference crown this year, is now 26-7 overall and 25-2 in NJCAA Division III Region III action. The Lady Vikings are ranked seventh in the nation among Division III junior colleges.

Kelly Scott (Schuylerville H.S.) tossed a two-hitter in the first game against Genesee, striking out two batters. Christyn Hamel (Averill Park H.S.) had three hits and two runs batted in, and Casey Brinkman (Troy H.S.) had two singles and three runs batted in.

In game two, pitcher Kim Prior (Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk H.S.) dominated, throwing a complete-game shutout. She allowed just one hit and struck out three batters. Hudson Valley's Kimberly Welcome (Cohoes H.S.) contributed three hits and three runs batted in.

Hudson Valley closes out the regular season with a doubleheader against Monroe Community College (23-7 overall, 13-1 Region III) at 1 p.m. on Sunday. With a high playoff seed – the Region III tournament begins Tuesday – on the line, the games will be played at Classie Lassie.
