Vikings Move Up To No. 5 In Nation

Hudson Valley Community College's men's soccer
team, which is currently preparing for the NJCAA Division III Region III
playoffs, jumped three spots in the most recent NJCAA Division III coach's
poll, released today. The Vikings (12-3), previously ranked eighth, are
now the No. 5 team in the nation.
Hudson Valley also has been awarded the No. 2 seed,
a bye into the quarterfinals and a home game in the upcoming Region III
playoffs. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, October 20, the Vikings (12-3) will host
the winner of an October 16 sub-regional contest between No. 7 SUNY Delhi
(8-5-1) and No. 10 Erie Community College (5-5-1).
Due to construction of a minor-league baseball stadium
at Hudson Valley, the quarterfinal contest will be played at Troy's La
Salle Institute. The winner advances to a semifinal game, which will be
contested at 1 p.m. on October 27 at Herkimer County Community College.
The championship game also will be played at Herkimer, at noon on October
28. The winner of the Region III tournament advances to the national championship
tourney, a two-day event that begins on November 10 in Germantown, Maryland.
With 12 wins this season, the Vikings are just one
win shy of tying Hudson Valley's record for men's soccer victories in a
season (Hudson Valley won 13 games in 1992). The school also won 12 games
In the 2000-01 academic year, Hudson Valley's athletic
teams combined to win 72 percent of their contests. The ice hockey team
won the NJCAA championship, the baseball team earned a berth in the NJCAA
World Series and the football team won the Region III title. The women's
basketball team earned a No. 1 national ranking and turned in a 24-3 record
while the men's hoop squad competed in the Region III championship game.
Additionally, two Vikings earned Region III Player-of-the-Year status,
20 were named All-Region III performers, and 10 were honored with All-American
