La Salle Institute, September 6 – On a beautiful Thursday afternoon, Hudson Valley Community College's men's soccer team opened up the 2001 campaign by taking on non-league foe Paul Smith's College. The Vikings lived up to their Honorable Mention selection on the recent preseason NJCAA Division III coach's poll, rolling over Paul Smith's, 6-1.

In the first half, the Vikings got started with a goal from Craig Hotaling (Columbia High) at the 4:46 mark, which was set up by Dan DiFiore (Averill Park High). Paul Smith's answered back three minutes later, though, putting a shot past a diving Stanley Kowalczyk (Sanford High, Florida). After that, the Vikings went on a rampage, scoring five unanswered goals. Tri-captains Hotaling and DiFiore (defender Chris Mahigian of Troy is the third captain) were a duo in the early going, working together for another goal with 11:06 expired.

Joe Teator (Maple Hill High) took on Paul Smith's defense by himself at the 14:24 mark to score. Hotaling then assisted Oleg Levchenko (Bethlehem High) on a goal at 24:35. With less than ten minutes left in the half, Desmond Gomes (Tanzania) scored an unassisted goal, giving the Vikings a 5-1 first-half edge.

In the second half, the teams played to a stalemate until the 18:03 mark. At that point, a penalty kick was called, which Hudson Valley's Adam Krawczak (Schalmont High) easily converted. Kowalczyk was solid in goal, recording 23 saves and never giving Paul Smith's a chance to get back into the game. Roberto LoGiudice (Guilderland High) spelled him briefly, making eight second-half saves.

"That was a great start for us," Hotaling said. "It's always good to start with a win."

The Vikings play next in Michigan on September 8, taking on Michigan's Macomb Community College, the No.5 Division III junior college in the nation.
