Hudson Valley Men's Soccer Opens Season Saturday

FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Friday, August 27, 2004

Since John Meehan became the head coach of the Hudson Valley Community College's soccer team in 2000, the Vikings have consistently been ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll and reached the Region III final four in each of his first three years.

The consecutive regional semifinals streak came to an abrupt end last year with a 1-0 loss to Alfred State College in the opening round of the tournament. However, the Vikings still finished the year with a 10-7 record – their fourth consecutive 10-win season.

The Vikings return seven players, who will be joined by a talented freshman class, looking to get back to the top of Region III in 2004. That journey will begin this weekend when Hudson Valley meets Dutchess Community College at 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 28 in the opening round of the Tompkins Cortland Community College Tournament in Dryden. Another successful season should see the Vikings post their fifth consecutive season with 10 or more wins – something that has never been accomplished in the 44-year history of the Hudson Valley men's soccer program.

"We have a good group of kids, but our schedule will once again be very difficult. We will need to play hard every game to be successful," Meehan said.

Leading the returning players is sophomore forward Mike Vooris (Castleton/Maple Hill High School), who was Hudson Valley's top point producer a year ago with eight goals and 12 assists.

"We need Mike to score some goals for us this year and lead the offense," Meehan said.

Sophomore Ryan Clair (Schenectady/Schenectady) is the top returning midfielder. He had two goals and five assists a year ago. Also returning in the midfield are Enrique Caceres (Schenectady/BishopGibbons High School) and Keith Kennedy (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon High School). Freshman Dan Vooris (Castleton/Maple Hill High School) is expected to have an immediate impact at the midfield position.

Sophomore Bob DiFiore (Averill Park/Averill Park High School) is Hudson Valley's top returning defenseman. He had a goal and five assists last season. Sophomore Kyle Jubie (Kingston/Kingston High School) also returns on defense.

Sophomore Joe Simon (Pittsfield, MA/Pittsfield High School) recorded six shutouts in goals for the Vikings a year ago, but will be challenged by freshmen Ryan Savery (East Greenbush/Columbia High School) and Justin Hamm (Amsterdam/Schenectady Christian School) for the starting goalkeeper's job in 2004.

Hudson Valley also will meet Holyoke Community College in the TC3 Tournament this weekend. The game kicks off at noon on Sunday, August 29. Hudson Valley's home opener is at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8 against Morrisville State College.
