Hudson Valley's Men's Soccer Season Ends, But Not
Before Vikings Earn A National Ranking And 10 Wins

The Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team fell short this afternoon in a bid to advance to the semifinal round of the NJCAA Region III Division III championship tournament, dropping a contest to homestanding SUNY Cobleskill, 3-1.

The Vikings, recently ranked 14th in the nation among NJCAA Division III squads, were seeded fifth in the tournament and finished the season with a 10-4 mark. Cobleskill, the number four seed, improved to 12-3-1. The Fighting Tigers play again on October 28.

Cobleskill scored first, with 34:51 left in the first half, but Hudson Valley responded just 29 seconds later. Second-year defenseman Evan Gilligan (Columbia) dribbled down the right side of the field and lofted the ball to a charging freshman forward Brad Fuller (Shenendehowa), who headed it into Cobleskill's net. The goal gave Fuller a team-high 13 on the season.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, Cobleskill scored twice more before the end of the first half, taking advantage of Erik LaGace's (La Salle Institute) flip throw-ins, for which he somersaulted toward the sideline, adding distance to his tosses. The Cobleskill defender was credited with three assists, all on throw-ins that landed near Hudson Valley's goal.

Hudson Valley had a second score in the first half, by forward Kyle Tomlinson (Amsterdam), but it was waved off due to offsides. The Vikings also hit the posts several times in the second half.

Stanley Kowalczyk (Sanford, FL) stopped 18 shots for Hudson Valley.

"Twenty of my 22 players are freshmen," first-year head coach John Meehan said. Only Gilligan and fellow defenseman Don VanPatten (Scotia-Glenville) will graduate this year. "This season was way above my expectations. My guys did great. They won a lot of games and they played with heart and style until the final whistle."
