Troy, NY - Freshman forward Mike Vooris (Castleton/Maple Hill High School) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career to lead the Hudson Valley Community College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Springfield Tech in the opening round of the Viking Classic earlier today.
Hudson Valley (1-0) will meet Fulton-Montgomery Community College at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 7 in the final game of the tournament. Springfield Tech, ranked seventh in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III poll, drops to 0-1.
Vooris opened the scoring with 23:40 remaining in the first half off assists from sophomore midfielder Roberto Besso (Colonie/South Colonie High School) and freshman forward Ryan Clair (Schenectady/Schenectady High School). Less than two minutes into the second half, Vooris tacked on his second goal off an assist from sophomore forward Rafael Luna (Albany/Albany High School).
Freshman fullback Kyle Jubie (Kingston/Kingston High School) scored the final Hudson Valley goal off an assist from freshman midfield Paul Lindon (Grenada/Boca Secondary School).
Freshman goalie Joe Simon (Pittsfield/Pittsfield High School) made 12 saves to earn his first collegiate shutout.
