Hudson Valley Men's and Women's Basketball Collect First Wins of Season

The Hudson Valley men's and women's basketball teams took on Corning Community College at the McDonough Sports Complex, Sunday, Nov. 8. After each team dropped its season opener, both Vikings squads defeated Corning .The men were victorious, 81-70 and, the women drilled the Lady Red Barons, 64-37.
The Vikings were led by the stellar play of Ramel Alexander (Berkshire, Albany). Alexander poured in a career high-37 points, grabbed seven rebounds, handed out five assists and had three thefts. Pat Lanoue (Hoosic Valley, Troy) chipped in 20 points.
After the first half, the score was 29-27, in favor of the Vikings. Hudson Valley came out energized in the second half, exploding for 52 points in the period, including 26 from Alexander.
The Lady Vikings jumped on Corning quickly in their matchup, going up 16-4 early in the first half. A drought in Hudson Valley scoring at the end of the half resulted in Corning cutting the lead to three at intermission. The Lady Vikings shut down the Red Barons in the second half, allowing only 10 points. Hudson Valley was led by Laurel Jicha (Hannibal, Hannibal) with 14 points. Paige Colfer (Watervliet, Menands) and Rachel Schoonmaker (Granville, Granville) each had double-doubles with 13 points and 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively.
Both teams will travel to take on conference rival Herkimer Community College on Tuesday Nov. 10.
