Vikings Open Region 3 Men’s Lacrosse Tournament With 19-7 Win Over Alfred State

TROY, NY – Ryan DeSalvatore, Sean O’Connell and Ryan Harper scored three goals each to lead the Hudson Valley Community College men’s lacrosse team to a 19-7 win over Alfred State today in the opening round of the Region III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament.

With the win, the Vikings will play the winner of tonight’s Onondaga-Jefferson game in the semifinals on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Herkimer Community College.

In their first home playoff game in over 20 years, the Vikings took control of the game early, as the O’Connell brothers scored goals 29 seconds apart to give Hudson Valley an early 2-0 lead. Sean O’Connell, who led the Vikings in scoring in the regular season with 50 points (31+19), took a pass from his brother Bryan and beat goalie Deljae Edwards for his 31st goal of the season at 12:35. After winning the ensuing faceoff, the Vikings came right back and scored as Bryan O’Connell took a pass from Sean and fired a shot past Edwards for his 19th goal of the season at 12:06.

Later in the first quarter, Hudson Valley added to its lead on goals by Mark Petter, DeSalvatore and Alexander Friello. Petter scored his 12th of the season at 8:56 and DeSalvatore added his 29th at 6:05 to give the Vikings a 4-0 lead. Josh Mateo got Alfred State on the scoreboard with a goal at 5:33, but Friello answered with his first goal of the season at 3:27 to give Hudson Valley a 5-1 lead after one quarter.

The Vikings, who entered the game second in Region III in team defense, allowing 7.0 goals per game, held Alfred State scoreless in the second quarter. Hudson Valley added to its lead on goals by John Washburn and Marc DeJordy and took a 7-1 lead into halftime.

The Vikings came out in the third quarter strong, scoring three goals in a span of 1:20, to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Sean O’Connell scored his second of the game 29 seconds in, and DeSalvatore and Harper scored 13 seconds apart at 13:53 and 13:40, respectively.

Hudson Valley outshot Alfred State, 37-17, in the game. Freshman goalie Kevin DeCelle, who entered the game ranked as the top goalie in Region III (.612 save percentage), made eight saves before giving way to Friello late in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings had eight players with two or more points in the game. Harper led Hudson Valley with seven points (3+4), Will Wilson-Jackson had five points (2+3), while Sean O’Connell and DeSalvatore each had three goals and one assist. Petter added a goal and three assists and Bryan O’Connell collected two goals and two assists.

With the win, the Vikings improve to 14-4, while the Pioneers end their season with a record of 8-6. The 14 wins for Hudson Valley is now a new school record.
