Head coach Ron Kuhl's squad is ranked second in the nation among junior college hockey teams. The Vikings (16-4) debuted at number two on the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association ice hockey poll, released on Jan. 30.

Hudson Valley is led by forwards Jim Sturges (East Hampton, MA) and Dean Vandervort (Northern Burlington, NJ), and goaltender Jason Vasco (CBA), a Clifton Park resident.

Sturges, who ranks among the top 10 scorers in Massachusetts high school hockey history, tops Hudson Valley with 48 points. The 5-foot-10 first-year player scored five goals against Broome Community College on Jan. 27.

Vandervort has tallied 46 points. Also a 5-foot-10 first-year player, he holds the freshman scoring record at Northern Burlington High School. Vandervort scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner, against Monroe Community College (ranked fifth in the nation) on Jan. 18, leading the Vikings to a 5-4 victory.

Vasco, a 6-foot goalie, played three seasons of varsity hockey and soccer at CBA. He has posted a 2.10 goals against average this year. He recorded his first shutout as a Viking against North Country Community College on Nov. 21, helping Hudson Valley score a 4-0 victory.

Hudson Valley plays a pair of home games this weekend. The Vikings will host Niagara County Community College at 7 p.m. on Saturday. They'll then play the Boston Jr. Blackhawks at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Both contests will take place at Troy's Conway Ice Arena, located in Hudson Valley's McDonough Sports Complex.
