Hudson Valley's Dean Vandervort Scores Game-Winner Late
In The Third Period To Beat Region-Leading Monroe

Troy, January 18 – Hudson Valley Community College's Dean Vandervort (Jacobstown, NJ) proved he could shine in the spotlight Thursday night.

"The difference tonight was Dean Vandervort and his last goal," said Hudson Valley hockey coach Ron Kuhl after Vandervort scored twice, leading the Vikings to a 5-4 Eastern Junior College Hockey League (EJCHL) victory against Monroe Community College. "Every time he takes the puck up the ice, something good happens."

That's exactly what Vandervort did at Troy's Conway Ice Arena Thursday evening. With the game tied, he went the length of the rink, juking out a pair of Monroe defenders to get a good look at the Monroe net. From 10 feet away, as he drifted toward the boards, Vandervort lifted a wrister into the opposite corner of the goal, scoring the game-winner with 6:22 left in the third period.

Vandervort also scored Hudson Valley's first goal, at 3:19 in the first period. The first-year center now has a team-high 15 goals.

The Vikings (11-4) also beat Monroe (7-7-1) on November 17, scoring a 3-2 overtime victory on the road.

While Vandervort put Hudson Valley on the scoreboard Thursday night, goaltender Jason Vasco (CBA) fended off the Monroe attack. The Vikings were hit with 18 penalty minutes, but Vasco and the Hudson Valley defense allowed just one power play goal. In fact, during a two-minute stretch in the second period, with Monroe sporting a 5-on-4 advantage, Vasco turned aside 10 shots. The freshman made 29 saves in all and held Monroe scoreless in the third period.

"He's a difference-maker," Kuhl said. "When one part of the team is flat, another piece picks it up. Jason came up huge tonight."

Kyle Reynolds (La Salle), Chris Paine (Saratoga) and Jim Sturges (North Hampton, MA) each scored a goal for the Vikings. Paine added a pair of assists.
