Hat Trick By Jim Sturges Helps Hudson Valley Down SUNY Canton, 5-2

Troy, November 4 – In an Eastern Junior College Hockey League matchup that featured shattered glass and hard hits, Hudson Valley Community College's hockey team upended the defending NJCAA national champions, SUNY Canton, at home for the second consecutive year. Hudson Valley forward Jim Sturges (East Hampton, MA) provided the knockout punch, tallying three unanswered scores in the second period. Sturges also contributed an assist.

Sturges, a freshman who ranks among the top-10 high school scorers in Massachusetts history, now has five goals on the season.

"He's a very smart hockey player who knows how to finish," Hudson Valley head coach Ron Kuhl said. "He knows the highway to the goal."

The Vikings trailed 1-0 early, but a Dean Vandervort (Jacobstown, NJ) goal, with an assist by Sturges, tied the game with just 1:20 left in the first period. Then, with Hudson Valley down a man 1:39 into the second period, Sturges stole the puck at mid-ice and skated in alone, slipping it underneath SUNY Canton's goaltender's stick and putting the Vikings ahead for good.

"You've got to crash the goal on a chance like that," Sturges said. "You've got to get the shot off. I saw an opportunity and I went for it."

Jason Vasco (CBA) had a solid day between the pipes for the Vikings, stopping 15 of 17 shots. Vandervort had a goal and two assists. Kyle Reynolds (La Salle Institute) added a score and Scott Bazzano (Seton Catholic) had an assist.

The loss drops SUNY Canton to 0-1. The Vikings improve to 2-1 (1-0 EJCHL). Hudson Valley plays again on November 8, traveling to Skidmore College for a 3:30 p.m. non-league game.
