Troy, N.Y., February 16, 2002 – Hudson Valley
Community College's ice hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie against SUNY Morrisville
this evening at Troy's Conway Ice Arena.
Hudson Valley, which was playing in its regular-season
finale, is 12-9-3 overall. The Vikings are ranked No. 4 in the nation among
Division III junior colleges. Morrisville, ranked No. 1, is 19-0-3.
Brian Mohan (La Salle Institute) put Hudson Valley
on the scoreboard first, firing in a high wrister at 5:51 in the first period.
Mohan tallied another goal midway through the second period.
Entering the third period, however, Hudson Valley trailed,
3-2. All-American Dean Vandervort (Northern Burlington H.S., NJ) changed
that, though, taking a pass from Hudson Valley teammate and fellow All-American
Jim Sturges (East Hampton H.S., MA) and skating in alone on Morrisville's
goalie. Vandervort, who also had a pair of assists, kept the puck low and
slipped it into the net to tie the game.
Regulation ended in a 3-3 deadlock, and the two teams
embarked on a five-minute overtime period. Jason Vasco (CBA) stopped both
shots Morrisville managed in the extra session – Vasco made 38 saves on the game
– and Hudson Valley fired off three shots but also was unable to score.
