The Hudson Valley Community College men’s hockey team (1-1) defeated RPI Club (0-1) 7-6 on Friday evening, and lost to Marist Club (1-0) 7-5 on Saturday evening to open the regular season.
The season started with a bang, defeating the RPI ACHA Club team Friday night at the Houston Field House 7–6. After RPI took an early 1–0 lead, Sophomore Patrick Raike (Christian Brothers Academy/Malta) tied the score on a break-a-way shortly after, and the Vikings never looked back. Rounding out the rest of the scoring were four different Freshmen, including a pair of goals each by William Huber (Arlington/Hopewell) and John Garro (Sleepy Hallow/Tarrytown), and one goal by Matt Wagner (LaSalle Institute/Clifton Park) and Kory Wilson (Montachusett Tech/Fitchburg). Sophomore Matt Crescione (Carey/West Hempstead) stopped 32 shots to preserve the season opener for the Vikings.
The Vikings then traveled to Poughkeepsie Saturday afternoon for a matinee game versus the Marist Red Foxes. After taking a 2–1 lead into the second period with two of Huber’s three goals, the Vikings surrendered the lead and could not close the gap. Also scoring for Hudson Valley were James Murphy (Comsewogue/Long Island) and Mike Sablesak (Syosset/Syosset). Freshman goal tender Mike Fay (Sachem East/Long Island) stopped 41 of 47 shots faced, but the Vikings gave up an empty netter with 12 seconds left, ending the comeback.
The Vikings host their first game on the season on Tuesday, Oct. 30 against Albany Club at 8 p.m.
