Although it was not pretty, the Hudson Valley Community College (5-2) football team escaped with a 26-2 win over RPI JV (0-2) Friday afternoon.

Hudson Valley, which has not lost to Rensselaer’s junior varsity squad in 16 all-time meetings, struggled to get its offense moving all day on the sloppy turf, amassing just five first downs and 180 total yards.

RPI took a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter when the Vikings’ long snapper overshot the punter and the ball went out of the end zone.

However, Hudson Valley recovered the ensuing kickoff. On the next play from scrimmage, freshman quarterback Shamar Carr (Middletown, CT/Middletown High School) went around the left side 71 yards for a touchdown to give Hudson Valley a 7-2 lead.

Freshman tailback Reidrick Alceus (Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland High School) gave the Vikings a 13-2 late in the first quarter with a 73-yard touchdown run. Alceus finished the game with 101 yards on six carries.

Freshman Eugene Cooper (Mount Vernon/Mount Vernon High School) scored from 23-yards out on an end around to give the Vikings a 19-2 lead heading into the break.

Hudson Valley’s final score came on a 37-yard punt return by sophomore Nick Carr (Albany/Colonie High School) midway through the third quarter.

The Vikings defense limited RPI to 11 yards on the ground and came away with three interceptions. Sophomore Jermey Pruitt (Far Rockaway/Far Rockaway High School) paced the defense with seven tackles.
