Football Falls to No. 18 Nassau

Nassau Community College used two late second quarter touchdowns to pull away from Hudson Valley Community College and cruised to a 34-13 win over the Vikings in Northeast Football Conference action on Saturday.
Hudson Valley falls to 2-3 on the season and will host RPI JV on Sunday, October 15. Nassau, which is ranked No. 18 in the latest NJCAA poll, improves its record to 5-1.
Hudson Valley freshman kicker Paul Young (Stafford, VA/Forest Park High School) hit a school-record tying 47-yard field goal to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:56 remaining in the second quarter.
The tie would not last long. Billy Shannon took the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give Nassau a 12-6 lead.
With Nassau facing a fourth down and 17 yards to go on its next possession, Cory Christopher hit Chris Harris with a 23-yard touchdown pass to give the Lions a 19-6 advantage going into the half.
Shannon scored from two yards away in the third quarter and from nine yards out in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. He rushed for 81 yards and three touchdowns on the day.
Sophomore Kyle Bowen (Albany/Bishop Maginn High School) gave Hudson Valley its only touchdown on an 83-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.
Christopher completed 12-of-23 passes for 142 yards and a touchdown.
Hudson Valley held a 304 to 250 total yard advantage in the game. Freshman running back Calvin Smith (Copiague/Copiague High School) carried the ball 21 times for 102 yards. Quarterback Rodney Turner (Media, PA/Strath Haven High School) completed eight-of-17 passes for 121 yards. Sophomore wide receiver David Smith (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris High School) caught five passes for 102 yards.
