Vikings Play Columbus State at noon Monday

Batavia, May 20 – Competing in the winner's bracket of the NJCAA Division III World Series at Batavia's Dwyer Field this afternoon, Hudson Valley Community College's baseball team fell victim to the No. 1 junior college Division III squad in the country. Hudson Valley, an Honorable Mention selection in the most recent national poll, lost to Eastfield College of Texas, 9-1.

The Vikings (33-9) will play Ohio's Columbus State Community College (47-20) at noon Monday. Since the World Series is a double-elimination tournament and each team has lost once, the winner of Monday's Hudson Valley-Columbus contest advances while the loser goes home. Eastfield (39-12) will play the winner of a game between Montgomery College (29-28) and Gloucester County College (43-7).

"Eastfield's pitcher was very good," said Tom Reinisch, Hudson Valley's head coach. "He was throwing hard the whole game, in the 90s."

Hudson Valley tallied one run, in the top of the third inning. Gennys Medina (Norman Thomas) led off the frame by drawing a walk. Later in the inning, with one out and Medina on third and a runner on first, second baseman Silvestre Castro (Norman Thomas) whacked a ground ball up the middle. Eastfield's infield recorded an out at second base, but Castro beat the throw to first, preventing an inning-ending out. Median raced home.

"Hey, we're in the national championships," Reinisch said. "We talked about it after the game; the competition is tough here, but we're very good, too. We've already won one game at the World Series. We just ran into a buzzsaw of a pitcher today. But I think the guys are OK. They'll be ready to play tomorrow. Mentally, they're fine."

Bobby Krogh (Troy) and Justin Meaghar (Colonie) each rapped hard singles. Medina added a bloop single.

Hudson Valley defeated Quinsigamond Community College of Massachusetts, 8-4, to kick off the World Series. Today, Castro, a First Team All Region III selection, was honored as a Third Team All-American infielder.
