TROY, NY – The Hudson Valley Community College baseball team split a doubleheader against Fulton-Montgomery Community College, winning the first game 5-3 and dropping the second game, 11-7, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Bruno Stadium.

In game one, the Vikings got a strong pitching performance from Justin Shannon (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia), who pitched a complete game one-hitter, allowing three runs and striking out a season-high 13 batters. The only hit Shannon allowed was a three-run home run by Roberto Cruz in the third inning that tied the game at 3-3.

Hudson Valley regained the lead in the fourth inning with two runs on two hits. Rich Guillod (Closter, NJ/ Northern Valley) hit a sacrifice fly to break the 4-4 tie.

Max Keado (Troy, NY/Catholic Central) went 2-for-3 and Scott Robinson (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) had two hits, including an RBI single for the Vikings. With the win, Shannon improved his record to 4-1 on the season.

In game two, the Vikings jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but Fulton-Montgomery rallied with four runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. After Roberto Cruz started off the inning with a double to left, Matt Fabosky, Ryan Gibson and Ronnie Cruz hit consecutive singles and Fernando Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to give the Raiders’ a 4-3 lead.

Fulton-Montgomery added two more runs in the fifth inning and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth. Osiris Mendez led off the inning with a home run and Gibson added a three-run blast to give the Raiders an 11-3 lead.

In the seventh inning, Robinson hit a two-run home run to right field that cut the lead to 11-7. But the Vikings’ rally came up short, as Fulton-Montgomery starter Moty Elhindi struck out Jeremy Villano with runners on first and third to end the game.

The Vikings return to action tomorrow when they host Broome Community College in a doubleheader at Joe Bruno Stadium (1 p.m. start).
