Adams Course Overview This course will expose the student to the actions essential to creating and running their own small business. There are over 25 million small businesses in the U.S. These businesses employ 52 percent of the work force and they generate more than 51 percent of the private sector GDP. This course will give the student the background needed to help create a successful venture. The course will demonstrate that the creation of a successful enterprise requires much more than a winning product or service idea. The student will be exposed to accounting, finance, marketing, management, operations and other topics that must be mastered in order for the small firm to be successful. Grade Evaluation: Homework/Quizzes 50% Final Project 30% Class Participation 20%
Business Cases – Following each chapter the student will be expected to complete a short business case which will force the student to think as though they are the decision maker within the case. This exercise will put the student in the shoes of the entrepreneur and help the student to think of what they would do in a given situation. The student must prepare the case individually and submit a short write up on the case. The following week the case will be discussed in class. There are many correct answers to the case so students are encouraged to formulate their own ideas. Final Project -. The final project will allow the student to utilize the concepts developed in class and will allow them to think as the owner of their own enterprise. Each student will develop a plan for their company and will deal with the issues needed to determine the feasibility of the business idea. Upon completion of the project the student will be familiar with the various issues in planning a business and will have the tools to take the next step in their business journey. Class Participation - Learning takes place when the exchange of ideas flows freely. I put a high emphasis on class participation to develop students' communication and interaction skills. Class attendance is definitely important and participation in the class discussion will show command of a particular topic. Group projects within class will be performed and it is expected that all students will participate throughout the semester. Attendance Policy – Students are expected to attend class on a regular basis. However, at times circumstances present themselves that do not allow students to attend. The policy of this class is that each student can miss two classes in the semester with a valid excuse without affecting their grade. Absences beyond this level are subject to grade reductions and should be discussed with the instructor. Any student missing more than 50% of the semester’s classes will not pass the course.
