What determines a full-time student? If I successfully complete four full-time semesters, can I  receive my degree in Individual Studies?

Twelve or more hours in the same semester is required to be a full-time student. You need to complete the 60 credits of degree requirements with a minimum 2.0 GPA. Therefore, if you only enroll in 12 hours each semester (the minimum to be a full-time student) it will take at least 5 semesters to graduate.

Will I pay additional tuition if I add credits?

Full-time tuition covers from 12 to 18 hours for the same price. However, if you can't maintain good grades while taking that many classes, it is NOT a bargain!

What does it mean to be a "matriculated" student?

It means that you have applied through Admissions and have been accepted into a particular major. You have also registered for classes leading to that degree.

I want to graduate in another major (such as Nursing, or Computer Information Systems) so why was I placed in the Individual Studies program?

You could be lacking courses that are required to get into that major. Refer to the "Program Entrance Requirements" in the catalog for that particular major. Not only does it require you to have completed the courses in high school (or equivalent courses in college) but in many cases you must also have achieved a minimum grade of a 70(C) or 80(B) in each course.

Who is my advisor in Individual Studies?

Although Mr. Wysocki's name is on all the correspondence sent to your home, he is our department chair and it isn't possible for him to serve as the advisor to the thousands of students enrolled in our department. Therefore, there are six full-time advisors and several part-time advisors who are available to meet with students. Refer to the advisement page for office hours.

How can I get credit for the college courses I took in high school? How many credits can I transfer from another college toward my Individual Studies degree?

If you took the courses through Hudson Valley Community College, they already count toward your degree. (However, it's a good idea to mention them during advisement, so that we are aware that you have already completed them.) To transfer credits from another accredited college, you must ask the Registrar of the college you attended to send an official transcript to HVCC. A maximum of 30 credits may be transferred toward your degree and a minimum grade of C is required.
