COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Designed to combine voluntary experience with academic learning, this course requires

     two – eight hours of weekly volunteer service in a community agency. Placement is arranged

     by the student in consultation with the instructor. In addition, students must keep a written log

     of their experiences and attend a one-hour weekly seminar to discuss and integrate related

     readings and volunteer work. Required hours of volunteer service per credit:

1.To express civic responsibility.

2.To gain first-hand experience in an area related to a personal interest or career goal.

3.To understand the functioning of a community organization

4.To develop an understanding of various work related issues - such as supervisor/ volunteer
     relationships, liability issues, ethics, diversity in the workplace, professionalism and
     confidentiality, etc.

5.To explore select developmental and sociological aspects of volunteerism

A placement is arranged by the student in consultation with the instructor.  In addition,
     students must keep a written log of their volunteer experiences and attend a one-hour
     weekly seminar to discuss related topics and volunteer experience.  A 3-5 page final
     summary report and supervisor evaluations are also required.  Since grading is partially
     based on class participation, it is important that you attend every class ON TIME. 
If you must miss a class, you are expected to contact the instructor prior to the next class. 

MIDTERM GRADE: 25 percent each: 1) Completed, signed contract & time sheet; 2) Journal;
     3) Class attendance and participation; and 4) Supervisor evaluation

FINAL GRADE: midterm averaged with second half grade: 25 percent each: 1) Completed,
     signed time sheet and supervisor evaluation; 2) Journal; 3) Class attendance and
     participation; and 4) Final Report
