Diana Edelman of Woodstock is the recipient of both the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Capital District Educational Opportunity Center's (CDEOC) Merit Award. She was honored at the Hudson Valley Community College Faculty Honors Convocation on May 14.
Edelman has been employed at the CDEOC since 1994, where she has taught English for Speakers of Other Languages, Reading Preparation, and Writing. Edelman has co-implemented International Heritage Celebration Week since 1996. She has also been involved in Women's History Month and other special events at the EOC. A breast cancer survivor, she also co-chairs Denim Day, a fund raising event that benefits the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In the summer of 1999, Edelman participated in a language intensive exchange in Costa Rico so that she could improve her Spanish while teaching Spanish-speakers English.
Edelman regards the EOC as a family. "The students are so inspiring and the faculty and staff are so supportive," she said. "There couldn't be a better place to teach, to learn, and to marvel at how much these courageous, determined adult students help and encourage each other."
Lucille Marion, Vice President/Executive Director, stated "Diana's resourcefulness, enthusiastic teaching style, and sensitivity to her students have made her a worthy recipient. We are proud to have her on staff."
