Watervliet Student Syed Abbas Honored by Hudson Valley Community College \"Photo

Syed Abbas of Watervliet, a 2007 graduate of Hudson Valley Community College’s Mathematics and Science program, was recently honored by the college.

Abbas received the George Baker Award, which is given to an outstanding graduate of the Mathematics and Science program. An honor student, he plans to continue his education this fall at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, majoring in electrical engineering. While at Hudson Valley, he was a peer tutor in mathematics and physics in the Learning Assistance Center.

Founded in 1953, Hudson Valley Community College offers more than 70 associate’s degree and certificate programs in four schools: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and also sponsors an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 12,000 students, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training. Hudson Valley has more than 60,000 alumni.
