FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Thursday, December 13, 2001

Golfers looking to shake the mid-winter rust off their swings can attend one of two four-week "Fundamentals of Golf" courses taught by PGA golf professional James Rothenberg at Hudson Valley Community College this winter.

Rothenberg is the head professional at Winding Brook Country Club in Valatie and author of the book, "The Skeptical Golfer." Players of all abilities are encouraged to enroll in the four-night course, and individual instruction will be emphasized.

The class will be offered Wednesday evenings, beginning January 23, and Thursday evenings, beginning January 24. Both sessions will run from 7 to 9:30 p.m. and will be held in the gymnasium of the Hy Rosenblum Administration Center, on the Hudson Valley campus. For more information, call 629-7339. The cost is $97 per four-week session.

James S. Rothenberg grew up in Miami Beach, watching golf legends like Sam Snead, Lloyd Mangrum and Arnold Palmer play. He has been a member of the PGA since 1968. His articles have appeared in "USGA Golf Journal," "PGA Magazine," and other publications.

Rothenberg's book, "The Skeptical Golfer," explores many of the dogmatic, oft-repeated axioms of golf instruction and studies the physical principles behind each. He then discusses why those pearls of golf wisdom are often misleading or incorrect. Rothenberg contends that sound technique, melded with positive thinking, can create the best golfing experience.

Hudson Valley Community College, located in Troy, offers more than 50 degree and certificate programs in four academic divisions: Business; Engineering and Industrial Technologies; Health Science; and Liberal Arts and Sciences; and an Educational Opportunity Center for academic and career training. One of 30 community colleges in the State University of New York system, it has an enrollment of more than 10,000 students each year, and is known as a leader in distance learning initiatives and workforce training.
