Dental Hygiene and Paramedic Students Practice Medical Emergencies At College\'s Dental Hygiene Clinic

CONTACT: Eric Bryant (518) 629-8072
FOR RELEASE: Immediate, Wednesday, March 17, 2004

Students from the college\'s Dental Hygiene and Paramedic-EMT programs will test their skills in responding to medical emergencies.

Instructors from the Paramedic program will act as clinic patients who have one of six emergency situations that are most commonly seen in the dental chair – heart attack, asthma attack, allergic reaction that progresses to anaphylactic shock, epileptic seizure, insulin shock, and dental-phobic hyperventilation leading to angina.

WHAT: When medical emergencies happen in the dentist\'s office, staff have to be prepared for the worst, and able to respond with the best possible treatment. That\'s the idea behind a mock emergency drill (no pun intended!) scheduled at Hudson Valley Community College \'s Dental Hygiene Clinic.
WHEN: The mock emergency drill will be Thursday, March 18, from 1 – 3:30 p.m.
WHERE: The Dental Hygiene clinic is located in Fitzgibbons Hall on the Hudson Valley Community College campus, 80 Vandenburgh Avenue, Troy.

Students in both the Dental Hygiene and Paramedic programs will respond to the emergency situations and instructors will provide feedback on how well they respond.

For more information or directions to the clinic, call 629-8072.
