Kids on Campus Summer 2018 Offerings: Summer Academy

Campers decorating foodSummer Academy is enrichment education for kids entering grades 1-8 (unless otherwise noted). On these pages you will find a variety of classes to interest and engage your child.

Programs for elementary, middle and high school students are scheduled so your child can attend in the morning, afternoon or both.

Summer Academy classes are held in the college's Viking Child Care Center (basement level) and Williams Hall. All students should report to the Summer Academy office in the Viking Child Care Center, Room B06, on the first day to check in and for room assignments. If there is any change, you will be notified before camp begins. Some situations require a different drop off location. Courses are taught by local elementary, middle and high school teachers in addition to Hudson Valley Community College faculty.

Beginning German
Have fun exploring a new language and culture! Learn basic German vocabulary and customs while singing songs, doing arts and crafts, and playing games. Each day will center around a different theme including colors, shapes, numbers, parts of the body and families. On the last day, you will be able to sample some yummy German treats. Course fee includes a $10 materials fee

Chemicals, Cells and Crime
Become a Mad Science Investigator. Campers will use forensic science to track down an elusive ice cream thief. Step into a chemist's shoes, mix and dissolve a variety of everyday ingredients to create amazing exothermic and endothermic reactions. Learn the basics of the code of life, and make a model of a cell including the organelles studied. Explore fundamental nuts and bolts of chemistry, starting with the principle of chemically counting.

Do you love to doodle and draw? "Drawing 101" is the place for you! We will use step-by-step drawing to learn how to draw people, animals, scenery and much more! LEGO Lovers: A Building Adventure
Do you love LEGOs? Look no further… this course is perfect for you! You will spend the week with other LEGO fans, and build your hearts out. Be challenged with different LEGO building ideas, participate in contests, and share ideas with your classmates. Space Camp
This camp is out of this world! We'll have tons of fun learning about our solar system and the astronauts who explore it. Learn about the history of space travel as well as exciting recent discoveries. Investigate the science behind how objects in our solar system move. Learn about planets, stars, constellations and other fascinating elements of outer space. We will design constellations, make erupting moon rocks and demonstrate the phases of the moon with Oreos. The American Girl Dolls are not only cherished friends, they are windows to a time period in history. In this second camp, we will meet five new American Girls and immerse ourselves in the time period of each doll. Each day will include the history, music, food, games and crafts of her time period. American Girl - Now we are cooking! (Entering grades 3 - 8)
Have you ever wondered how the American Girls prepared meals? We are going to find out! We will be making homemade butter, molded in real molds from 1887-1913. We will be making homemade cheese, bread and pretzels. We will take a culinary journey from the past to the present. We will explore foods from all over the planet from France to Hawaii and beyond. We will cook, we will learn and, as always, we will have fun doing our American Girl thing! Course fee includes a $15 materials fee.

Cookie Craze
Let's go crazy for cookies! In this class, we will be baking some of our favorites like chocolate chips, sugar cookies and even Granny's oatmeal cookies. We will also be exploring cookies from around the world, from Italy to Mexico to Turkey. And just when you think it couldn't get any better, we will also make ice cream cookie sandwiches. This will all lead to a final cookie challenge on Friday with a "Cookie-Off." This week, we will all become Cookie Monsters. Course fee includes a $15 materials fee.

Virtual Reality: The Future is Now
Embark on an epic adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. You do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset at home you'll need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams and VR Games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. In addition, we will spend some time figuring out how our individuality can help in challenging situations such as peer pressure and relationships with family and friends. American Girls - Now we are Cooking! (Entering grades 3- 8)
Have you ever wondered how the American Girls prepared meals? We are going to find out! We will be making homemade butter, molded in real molds from 1887-1913. We will be making homemade cheese, bread and pretzels. We will take a culinary journey from the past to the present. We will explore foods from all over the planet from France to Hawaii and beyond. Forensics Crime Scene II (Entering grades 6 - 9)
Forensics II will be a more science-based approach to forensics. We will use math and science to determine the trajectory of blood spatter and use science to test saliva on various surfaces to catch a "killer." We will learn more in-depth investigation techniques. The week will culminate in solving a crime with our newly-learned crime scene techniques. Course fee includes a $10 materials fee. Pre-requisite: Forensics I.

In this Black Rocket classic, you will go well beyond the limitations of traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. We will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling the flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Minecraft Modders
Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods. Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. To access your project at home you must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. We will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Returning students can create more advanced projects that build on previous years.

Embark on an epic adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments, and crafting memorable 3D experiences.
